Strengthening Seismic Resilience: CA, Caucasus and U.S. Experts Advance Regional Earthquake Monitoring at Seismic Data Training
Seismic experts from CA, Caucasus and U.S. gathered in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on May 12-16 for a regional training on seismic data management. Hosted under the framework of the U.S.-funded Seismic Network Expansion in the Caucasus and Central Asia (SNECCA) project, the event brought together representatives from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan to enhance regional capacity in earthquake monitoring, data sharing, and disaster preparedness.
Organized by the ISTC in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, the training focused on building technical expertise in the use of SeisComP software, metadata generation, and EarthScope web services - key tools for real-time seismic data processing and exchange.
The training featured a combination of practical sessions and technical discussions, including:
- Presentations from each country on the current state of seismic networks and data quality
- Installation and configuration of SeisComP software
- Hands-on modules covering metadata management, data integration, and network operation
- Deep dives into EarthScope web services and ISPAQ tools for data quality control
The SNECCA project, launched in 2019 and implemented jointly by ISTC and STCU (Science and Technology Center in Ukraine), has already made significant achievements by installing 88 modern seismic stations and upgrading national data centers across Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan.
