The International Science and Technology Center conducted its annual Working Group Meeting in Brussels, Belgium on 18-19 October. The meeting’s purpose was to plan for ISTC’s strategy within the context of its extensive future research and activities in the coming years. The two-day meeting addressed strategic communications as well as planning for ISTC’s 30th anniversary next year and the EXPO event in Osaka, Japan, in 2025. Kazakhstan’s participation in the ISTC Strategic Advisory Committee was also discussed.

The meeting hosted by the EU was attended by all 10 ISTC country members, including Armenia, Georgia, Japan, Norway, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, South Korea, Tajikistan and the USA, both in person and remotely. Kazakhstan was represented by an MFA representative from the Kazakhstan Embassy of Belgium, along with the Science Fund and Science Committee of the Ministry of Higher Education and Science.

ISTC was established in 1992 as a nonproliferation program providing former weapons scientists from the Commonwealth of Independent States and Georgia with new opportunities for sustainable, peaceful employment. In 2015, the ISTC’s mandate was renewed with an updated mission to address the global threat of weapons of mass destruction and the worldwide proliferation of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear knowledge and materials.
