Georgia TB Portals Study Visit

article
The team from the NIH National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases conducted a site visit to Tbilisi, Georgia to review and discuss the progress of the country’s component of the TB Portals Program, which is supported by ISTC. An interdisciplinary team of scientific researchers and physicians connected over the course of 3 days to discuss the current progress, and new opportunities to further collaboration.

The TB Portals Program is a multi-national collaboration for tuberculosis data sharing and analysis to advance understanding of the disease and assist in development of the novel interventions.

Scientists from eastern Europe, Asia, Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa contribute high-quality data, including pathogen genomic, radiological images and clinical data to the common repository.

TB Portals advanced data science methods and tools are freely available to the worldwide research community to assist in better understating of the disease and help answer their research questions.

Tuberculosis is commonly believed to have been well controlled in the 21st century, however new drug resistant forms emerged and now pose a significant threat to global health, with an estimated 10.6 million cases globally in 2021. Collaboration with clinical and research partners is an important part of the TB Portals Program, which provides scientists access to the TB Portals Program’s high-quality data repository, and novel tools for deep multi-domain analyses. ISTC looks forward to continued support of the TB Portals program in multiple countries in their portfolio.
