Seminar on Water Management in Central Asia and the Caucasus for agriculture, industrial and urban application.

 

On 20th and 21st April, 2017 International Science and Technology Center (ISTC) hosted its annual Science Advisory Committee (SAC) Seminar on Water Management in Central Asia and the Caucasus at the Rahat Palace Hotel in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The seminar arranged by the ISTC Science Advisory Committee (SAC) members with Chairman Dr. Tokio Fukahori and managed by Dr. Nigel Lightfoot (CBE) and ISTC Executive Director Mr. David Cleave, brought together more than 50 participants from the Central Asia and Caucasus regions including countries such as Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Armenia, Georgia, Uzbekistan and Pakistan with specialists from US, EU and Japan, to discuss and present the regional water management problems faced in their countries as well as to seek new networks of like-minded scientists, to discuss and search new ideas to resolve issues of Water Management in general.

An array of speakers from USGS, University of Twente, University of Würzburg, LLNL, and others presented issues on Earth observation and water management, research, desalination, contaminant monitoring, decontamination of water and soil and many other topics. Additionally, 3 working groups discussed regional transboundary project proposals and also advice was given on how to make such project proposals successful.

Due to the success of the seminar it is envisaged that a follow up meeting will be convened later on in 2017.
