Biological and Genetic Characterisation of Animal Pathogens

Project Status: 8 Project completed
Commencement Date: 01.11.2000
Duration in months: 72 months

Objective

The objective of proposed project is maintenance, biological and genetic characterization of animal pathogens as well as elaboration of the regional microbial type culture collection of SRAI as a part of the world bank.

Implementation of planned tasks will make it possible:

· to study mechanisms associated with virulence and reactogenicity of viruses;
· to identify the factors of active effect on a virus genome with a goal to obtain vaccinal strains of higher immunogenicity;
· to specify the most effective approaches to expansion of cell culture and laboratory animals ranges for large-scale production of viruses.

The obtained experimental data will allow to improve the existing means of laboratory diagnostics and specific prophylaxis for viral infections as well as to construct vaccines and diagnosticals of a new generation to meet the requirements of Kazakhstani stock breeding.

The project financing will favour the recurrent refreshment and maintenance of strains in natural hosts with simultaneous study of their genetics, genetic stability and gene mapping of the major strains of microorganisms of practical importance. Biological characteristics of some virulent and attenuated strains and isolates of microorganisms will be studied.

The project work will allow to maintain and elaborate the unique microbial type culture collection of SRAI under conditions of social and economical difficulties of the state, to make the bank work at SRAI meeting contemporary requirements. Moreover, the research work according to the proposed project will result in replenishment of nomenclature and characteristics of strains of existing microbial catalogue and in integration of information on strains to international interchange.
