European Union and the Government of Tajikistan Announce Completion of Key Infrastructure Works to Improve Water Safety in Istiklol
1st December 2025, Dushanbe – Tajikistan
The official inauguration and commissioning ceremony will take place on 4 December 2025 at 12.00 in Istiklol with participation of representatives from the European Union, the Government of Tajikistan, the International Science and Technology Centre (ISTC) and local authorities. The Project Summary available for download is providing an overview of the project’s objectives, achievements and expected long-term impact.
The European Union, in close cooperation with the Ministry of Industry and New Technologies of the Republic of Tajikistan, announces the completion of major construction works under the EU-funded “Istiklol/Taboshar Water Supply & Treatment Project”, implemented by the International Science and Technology Center (ISTC) and G.E.O.S. Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH. The project addresses a critical environmental and public health challenge caused by uranium-contaminated water flowing from legacy mining tunnels above Istiklol, where previous EU assessments identified concentrations up to 50 times higher than WHO health-based limits.

Two major upgrades have been completed: a system diverting contaminated mine water away from communities, and a new pipeline bringing clean spring water to Istiklol’s main reservoirs. These improvements strengthen water safety for over 15,000 residents and support the EU’s wider Environmental Remediation Programme in Central Asia. Fully financed by the European Union, the project serves as a strategic pilot to guide future remediation initiatives across the region.
