Project summaryAt present a problem of epidemic prevalence of thyroid gland pathologies in countries of Black Sea region and, particularly, in Georgia is extremely actual. In some geographical zones, especially in endemic regions and lately on the Black Sea coast there are various forms of goiter. According to the data of Georgian Ministry of Public Health about 45% of population are sick with goitre. The reasons of such situation can be different – iodine and other microelement deficiency, disturbances in immune system, malnutrition and etc. Iodine deficiency in organism causes serious physiological disturbances, intensifies functional insufficiency of immuno-competent cells and provokes disturbances of organism reactivity which lead to disturbance of thyroid hormones formation that in turn leads to the lowering of immunity, the disturbance of functioning of central nervous and cardio-vascular systems and metabolic processes. Due to iodine deficiency, infants already during the first year of life lag behind in physical development and have anomalies in build. Pathological state of thyroid gland due to iodine deficiency causes disturbances of child brain functions. Because of such heavy situation the Georgian Government considers as a very important the finding out and liquidation of endocrine diseases which are classified as ”epidemic” ones. The President of Georgia issued a decree No.109 from 30.03.1998 in which the elaboration and creation of preparation for decrease of endocrine disease risk are welcome.
Today according to data of the World Health Organization, the blue-green microalgae Spirulina platensis to its potential possibilities is one of excellent components of nourishment and medical preparations used for organism improving from a health point of view. Spirulina attracts more and more attention of scientists-physicians as nourishing and potentially pharmaceutical product. Spirulina can inhibit viral replication, can strengthen the immune system on cell level and it also promotes the anti-oxidant protection of organism.
Simultaneous using of universal biochemical composition and unique sanifary properties of Spirulina platensis with presenting in its cells tyrosine (aminoacid participated in thyroid hormone synthesis) and iodine gives possibility to propose a creation of ecologically pure preparation possessing properties of treatment of organism diseases caused by iodine deficiency and definite immune disturbances. It is very important because at fulfilment of ISTC project G-342 it was established by neutron-activation analysis that:
– spirulina cells actively absorb iodine;
– iodine concentration in lyophilized Spirulina powder remains unchanged during a year.
The goal of the proposed project is the development and creation of medicinal-preventive preparation on the basis of iodine-enriched blue-green algae Spirulina platensis obtaining by biotechnological method with using created by us photobioreactor and developed by us technologies.
The main tasks for solution of the above mentioned problem are:
– creation of biotechnological manufacture for obtaining tablettes of iodized lyophilized powder Spirulina platensis with various iodine concentrations;
– carrying out experimental and clinical studies with using iodine-enriched Spirulina platensis as medicinal-preventive preparation in cases of pathologies occurred in human organism at the pathologies caused by iodine deficiency.
On the basis of created biotechnological manufacture we developed a preparation from iodized Spirulina platensis. Iodine stably (during 1 year) accumulated in Spirulina cells with various concentrations.
Creation of biotechnological manufacture for obtaining iodized Spirulina platensis on the basis of photobioreactor and technology developed by us, presentation of the request for registration of preventive-treatment preparation at corresponding state institutions.
Commercial using of results.
After creation of the preparation and biotechnological manufacture the possibility of mass production of preparation and selling will appear.
