Project summary

The Project objective is development of portable analyzers with hybrid chromato- and mass-spectrometric functions. Their working is based on previously unknown methods of chromatographic separation:
- Ion Stream Chromatography - ISC;
- Gas-Ion-Adsorptive (Partition) Chromatography - GIG.

In ISC, a flow of ions of a gaseous substance is proposed for use as one of the exchanging phases. In GIG, components of mixture to be analyzed are first ionized and then separated by gas Chromatography (see M.F.Gumerov. New alternatives of chromatographic separation. Journal Phys. Chem. 1995, v.69, p.2056-2058).

Within the framework of the Project, it is envisaged:


- to carry out research activities aimed at realization of the above-mentioned chromatographic process, study their mechanisms and analytical potentialities;
- to design and make model prototypes of chromatographic and chromato-mass-spectrometric analyzers, and to test their performance characteristics;
- to develop procedures for chromatographic and chromato-mass-spectrometric analysis of multi-component mixtures, and to form data bank.

Implementation of the Project sets the stage for the development of portable analyzers with hybrid chromato- and mass-spectrometric functions which could be adapted for the accomplishment various analytical tasks in ecology, medicine, field geology, nuclear, chemistry, radio-electronics, and other industries.

As to basic research, results obtained will make it possible to broaden the view of potentialities as a method. This is primarily due to the use of a substance in an ionic state as one of the exchanging phases in Chromatography.

Thus, in addition to the two known methods:


- Liquid Stream Chromatography,
- Gas Stream Chromatography,

there can appear the third one namely:


- Ion Stream Chromatography.

The Project is open for Russian and foreign collaborators.
