Project summary

Artificial diamonds are widely used in up-to-date engineering. Using of explosion for diamond synthesis promises reduction of cost and extension of production without large investments. On this point the most attractive approach is the simplest and the most natural one when diamonds are originated in the HE explosion products (EP). In spite of small dimensions (tens of A), ultradispersed diamonds of explosion origin are used in industry for producing grinding pastes, increasing service time of cutting tools and other purposes.

Phenomenon of diamond origination in EP has been known for more than 30 years but there are still some issues requiring further study. Development of theory and a physical-mathematical model for processes of dynamic synthesis of diamonds in EP is the actual problem.

Objective of this project is to develop such model, verify it through results of experiments and apply it for comprehensive computational optimization of technological process of dynamic synthesis of diamonds with further verification of practical recommendations through experiments.

Besides general scientific interest, expected results of the project implementation maybe of practical use for improving cost/ benefit parameters of producing synthetic diamonds with dynamic method.

VNIITF has gained great experience in experimental study and mathematical simulation of the explosion processes. Project implementation will allow to use this experience for peaceful purpose - improving efficiency of promising commercial technology.

After finishing the project it is possible to commercialize the work in this direction and design a commercial facility for producing artificial diamonds.

Potential Role of Foreign Collaborators

The work is assumed to be performed in close cooperation with Los-Alamos National Laboratory of USA, which will be our foreign collaborator.

Lately an interest grows to feasibility studies in applications of mathematical simulation to improving the efficiency of technological processes, therefore, the project might be also interesting for EU representatives and Japan.
