Project summary

Summary of the objectives of the Project, the technical approach and the anticipated results: in Kalinin APP there is a problem of reliability for quide bearings of circulational pumps. Frequent failures of regular plain bearings with rubber-metallic inserts result in the necessity to shut-down the turbines, threatening the safety of APP operation. Within the framework of conversion to use an experience in the developments of tribotechnique for propulsive device sets in ships at the CSRISBT for enhancing the plain bearing reliability of maintaining plain bearings in circulational pumps of atomic power plants (APP).

For increasing the service life of the pumps at APP it is expected to use an experience in the maintenance of ships. In particular,

- to optimize the bearing geometry;
- to modify the bearing desighn for reduction of autooscillation phenomena, “stick-slip”;
- type, and for uniform distribution of pressure along the bearing;
- to apply the ion implantation technique for the friction coefficient reduction in rubbing pairs and to increase their wear resistance.

The ion implantation technique implementation, as an experience in the maintenance of three Russian atomic icebreakers “Arctic” - type, has shown, will also allow one to reduce the starting torque under starting the circulating pumps up under limited lubrication by water and vibration.

Technical approach

For attaining the Project goals both the results of the scientific research and experimental design studies with respect to the bearing modifications for the propeller shafts performed at CSRISBT, system of coolin and lubrication of the submarine bearings by sea water respective to the plain bearings in circulating pumps at APP, and the ion implantation techniques and the implantation-plasma treatment for reduction of the friction coefficient and for enhancing the wear resistance of rubbing rubber-metal pairs at RRC “Kurchatov Institute” will be used.

In that case, the unique equipment at the disposal of “KI” will be used for performing the implantation and the plasma surface treatment of the samples made of rubber and of other antifrictional materials (capralon). The studies of surface properties in the irradiated materials will be done at CSRISBT under the conditions close to the real ones and at RRC “KI”. The produced results will be used for realizing the implantation directly into elastomeric rolling solids of revolution, new design, which will be developed at CSRISBT and tested at stands, as well as directly in the sets of circulating pumps at Kalinin APP.

Expected Results

The Project possesses of a great commercial potential, since its results can be expanded to other APP in Rassia, CIS and, probably, in other countries.

The principal difference of a given Project from the similar ones with implementation of the ion implantation technique is the usage of this technique for improving the surface proporties of rubber. There is no information in publications about similar studies applicable to rubber. In this connection, an opportunity to spread the developed technology of strengthening rebber to other designs, where the rubber-metalic rubbing pairs or rubber ones only are used, is of imfortance.

It is expected that the modification of plain bearings for circulating APP - pumpswould be able to provide their continuous operation for many times. In particular, one should emphasize the fact that the Project opens some prospects for the repair of standard bearings.

The role of colaborators will consists in the consultations and informations about the problem in the scientific and technical fields, estimation of the market of proposed new material treatment technologies, communication with fireigner company for the purpose of joint activity and marketing.
