Project summary

Goal of the Project – development of water-soluble polymer reagents of a polyfunctional activity, the application of which can provide for efficiency of technological processes of utilization of radioactive wastes, purification of chlorine- and phosphorus-organic compounds and increase ecological safety of a number of industrial objects, atomic electric stations.

Topicality of the proposed project consists in the creation of universal water-soluble polymers with different functional groups (nitrogen-, phosphorus-, and carboxyl-), combining several properties in one compound. Linear structure of macromolecules, wide range of molecular masses, availability of active groups, high rate of ionic exchange presuppose to use them as reagents of multifunctional purpose. Multifunctionality of the proposed reagents will make it possible to significantly reduce energy expenses for their production and contribute to the environment protection.

A promising character of the creation of new water-soluble polymers with different active groups, possessing a number of valuable properties, has been shown in the works of foreign and domestic authors, as well as in the investigations, carried out in the Republic of Kazakhstan

Expected results and their application. As a result of the conducted studies there will be developed conditions for synthesis of water – soluble nitrogen – and phosphorus – containing polymers, creation on their basis of highly efficient preparations of alternative fertilizers to nitrogen – phosphatic ones. They also can be used as structure-formers of soils, plant growth stimulants under conditions of strong soil salinity (Pre-Aralie).

There will be synthesized soluble polymers with high complex – forming ability to the ions of rare, transient and precious metals.

There will be determined technological parameters of the use of water – soluble high – molecular compounds, containing active groups, determined the composition of polymers, displaying the highest efficiency of activity as complex-forming agents. There will be studied an interaction of water-soluble polymers with ions of cesium, strontium, heavy metals, chlorine- and phosphorus-organic pesticides, aromatic carbons, which will allow one to create technology of utilization of radioactive wastes.

There will be determined possibilities of the use of water-soluble polymeric reagents, displaying the highest efficiency of activity as decoration preparations and textile-auxiliary substances, providing for the sanitary-hygienic conditions favorable for a human being.

Volume of activity. With the support of ISTC we suppose to synthesize new water – soluble polymers with different functional groups, the combination of which stipulates a wide range of their practical application.

The proposed program of investigation consists of 3 stages, the fulfillment of which possesses a certain scientific and practical value.

The first stage: Development of the methods of synthesis of new water – soluble polymers with nitrogen – and phosphorus – containing groups by the methods of chemical modification of widely available monomers (polystyrene and styrene copolymers), the study of physico – chemical and complex – forming properties. As a result of the first stage of the investigation there will be determined conditions of synthesis of new cation and anion polymers.

The second stage: Synthesis of new water – soluble polymers with oxy-, sulfo-, and aminocarboxylic groups by the methods of radical homo-, and copolymerization of ionogenic monomers. As a result of the second stage there will be developed polymers of the pre-set composition, structure with regulated molecular parameters and physical-chemical properties.

The third stage: Estimation of a possibility to use the revealed polymer reagents as complex – formers, growth – regulators, structure – formers, organic mineral fertilizers, auxiliary means for textile industry. As a result of the third stage there will be determined composition and structure of polymers, displaying a high efficiency of activity as reagents: for pre-sowing treatment of seeds, utilization of radioactive wastes, decoration of textile materials.

Realization of ISTC goals and tasks. Weapon – producing scientists will be given an opportunity for re – orientation of their activity to the field of scientific studies for the utilization of radioactive wastes, creation of wasteless technologies on the basis of the developments of the scientists of the Almaty technological University. As a result of this, it will be possible to pass to the market economy and to realize an integration of the scientists and specialists of the republic in the world scientific community. There will be created prerequisites for the solution of some international technical problems (especially this concerns the utilization of radioactive wastes from waste and other waters).

The role of foreign Collaborators. Consistent with the scope of activities of the project proposal with a foreign collaborator there will be ensured:

  • the fulfillment of the main requirements at all stages, up till its termination;
  • information exchange in the course of project implementation.

Technological approach and methodology. The proposed approach is based on the use for synthesis of water-soluble nitrogen- and phosphorus-containing polymers of the available initials, like polystyrene and their derivatives, derivatives of piperidine acids, aminoacids with the attraction of the reactions of polymerization, copolymerization, chemical modification, which will allow one to synthesize new polufunctional polyelectrolytes. A study of kinetic parameters of polymer formation makes it possible to obtain new water-soluble polyelectrolytes of the pre-set composition and structure with the regulated molar parameters.

As a result of the conducted studies there will be obtained experimental data on the creation of new water-soluble polymers, characterized by a wide range of activity. Alongside with their complex-forming properties they can be used as soil structure-formers, organic-mineral fertilizers, which are efficient in considerably less concentrations than nitrogen-phosphorus fertilizers, plant growth stimulants, reagents for pre-sowing treatment of seeds, reagents for increasing of oil-extraction of layers, remedies for the struggle against salt and asphalt-resinous and layer sediments and corrosion.

The proposed project will be carried out by highly qualified personnel of the Almaty Technological University, A.B. Bekturov Institute of Chemical Sciences MES RK, Institute of Nuclear Physics of the national Nuclear center RK. All participants of the project possess a large experience in developments in the field of polymer synthesis and a perfect knowledge of the modern physical-chemical methods of investigation of high molecular compounds.
