Project summary

The goal of the project is the investigation of the processes and the creation of experimental high pressure hydrogen-oxygen steam generators. This device is a new key element of perspective ecologically clean hydrogen power plants using steam-turbine cycle, of hydrogen energy storage systems for autonomous energy supply plants (including systems, based on renewable energy resources utilization) and of peak operation devices for upgraded or newly developed power plants. Research and development in the field of Н22– steam generators and operation cycle analysis of the power units based on them were carried out in the recent years in Germany, Russia, Japan, Italy, China, the USA and in the number of other countries. Numerous investigations of thermodynamic efficiency of hydrogen power plants using steam-turbine cycle with Н22 – steam generator, fulfilled in the above mentioned countries, show, that their efficiency accounts for 60%, and at capacity level of ~ 10 MW and more, these units show better feasibility than hydrogen power units based on fuel cell technology. Experimental pilot Н22- steam generators are created in Germany (DLR) and Russia (IVTAN – Keldysh Center cooperation), separate units and integrated test facility are built in Japan within WE-Net project. The level of the achieved temperatures and pressures (P=100 atm) of Russian test device compare well with German (P=45-80 atm) and Japanese (P=25 atm) devices. Japanese R&D program is aimed at the following parameters of Н22- steam generator: capacity 500 MW, P=4.75 MPa, T=1,700° С, and supposes the development of the corresponding new turbine. Russian and German researches suppose the development of the units for the power plants using the existing turbine types, i.e. steam temperatures from 1,000° С and increased pressures. The distinguishing features of the domestic device are original decisions of ignition, combustion chamber head and geometry, giving the opportunity to develop universal and compact device with increased efficiency. These technical decisions are protected by two Russian Federation patents.

The project contains experimental and theoretical studies of the processes in steam generating unit and components, creation and testing of experimental Н22- steam generators with thermal capacity from 20 kW to (25-30) MW at generated steam pressure from 10 to 100 atm and temperature 1,200 K. The experience of the aviation, space and special power engineering technologies in the development of high temperature combustion chambers and rocket engines is used at realization of the project. The project includes cycle analysis and optimization of the schemes of ecologically clean hydrogen power units of different types and peak operation devices for upgraded power plants at use of the corresponding domestic steam turbines. Together with this, the possibility will be studied and scheme decisions developed for the use of Н22- steam generators as compact and mobile sources of clean high temperature steam for various power and technological processes, sterilization and desinfection of objects. The creation of the prototype for commercial power unit will be the final result of the project. This experimental module will consist of Н22- steam generator, fuel supply system, control system (including software), definition of the fields of application in industry and technical task for the development of the experimental-industrial unit.

The projects corresponds with ISTC goals and tasks, because includes basic and applied activities in the fields of power engineering, power production technology and environmental protection.

The specialists and technical personnel engaged in the project were participating in the recent years in researches in the field of rocket engines using solid and liquid fuel for ballistic missiles and in decomposing material creation for military purposes.

The project participants in 2000-2001 built laboratory samples of experimental Н22-steam generators and fulfilled the first cycle of experimental investigations, showing the good perspectives of R&D in this field. These investigations create the necessary background for the project development. The project results have commercial potential and can form the long-term economic basis for scientists and engineers, supporting the conversion of industry from military to civil needs by creating industrial equipment.

Project plan for two years includes the following interconnected lines of activity, in correspondence to the goals of the project:

– Series of experimental investigations of the steam generating processes in laboratory samples of Н22-steam generators, created in 2000-2001 by IVTAN – Keldysh Center cooperation within the State Contract with Ministry of Science and Industry 701-16-(00)-П.


– Design-theoretical investigations of the processes in the units of Н22-steam generator and of the other parts of power units. Design optimization on the base of the obtained experimental and modeling data.
– Creation of the modified experimental unit of Н22-steam generator with (25-30) MW (t) capacity including: Н22-steam generator, component supply system, control system, software.
– Creation of experimental Н22- steam generator unit with capacity (20-100) kW (t).
– Operation regime working out for experimental Н22- steam generators and definition of the basic actuating fluid features at stationary and varying regimes.
– Thermodynamic and feasibility analysis of various types of power units using Н22-steam generators and determining the most rational schemes of their use in domestic power production and energy technology.
– Revision of the experimental modules according to the results of investigations up to the level of industrial prototypes, tests of these prototype Н22-steam generators, development of technical task for the manufacturing of experimental-industrial units for use in power production and energy technology.

The proposed technology is first of all can be of interest for such countries as Italy, Germany, USA, Lithuania, Japan, EEC countries, CIS countries and others.
