Project summary

The main objectives of the project are the development of a new non-invasive technique for investigation of cardiovascular system and blood circulation in the main organs, evaluation of the methodic basis and working out of an experimental device.

The progression from normal physiological activity of cardiovascular system to its pathologic one is accompanied with fixation of compensatory mechanism of circulation system, first, local and central one, this leads to increased peripheral vessel resistance. It is well known, that increased vessels tone is one of the major causes of arterial hypertension and heart failure that may result in worsening of patients condition, quality of their life and prognosis.

Thus, for prompt and full investigation of circulation status, it is necessary to simultaneously evaluate this multilevel hemodynamic reaction. However, modern instrumental methods of detailed study of different areas of cardiovascular system do not permit to carry out objective evaluation of their interaction. There are neither methodical, nor technical means for complex investigation of the blood circulatory system. Therefore, the question to what extend the current status of the blood circulation satisfies the metabolic needs remained open. Statistical data indicate that the number of patients with cardiovascular disease is increasing annually. Chronic heart failure (CHF), that is intercurrent to any serious cardiac pathology and drastifically worsens patient prognosis has developed into epidemic. Therefore the search for a new diagnostic means for early evaluation of cardiac insufficiency and prevent its’ manifestation is one of the most important goal of modern medicine, and cardiology, in particular. Novel technique for complex, functional examination of blood circulation system status is based on the measurement of tissue electric resistance during the cardiac work. It is aimed at optimisation of the diagnosis and inpidualization of their therapeutic approach by revealing and inpidualization of the cardiac and extra-cardiac circulatory factors that influence the cardio-vascular system in complex manner. Hemodynamic response of the cardiovascular system and effect of different pharmacological agents will be studied. It is important, that the suggested technique makes it possible to prove the necessity of early preventive hemodynamic correction in patients with high risk of circulatory disorders and CHF manifestation. It is almost important for people that occupy key positions are in business and for elderly patients. Clinically not manifested CHF is not the subject of classification and treatment. However, pathophysiological and physiological data obtained indicate that CHF develops long before of its clinical manifestation. Therefore, farther investigations in this field may positively influence the prevention and early diagnosis of CHF. Especially, as mortality due to CHF is permanently increasing and already developed into epidemic.

Thus, the project suggested gives new possibilities to study the state of blood circulation system and its hemodynamic response to increased share stress (loads), evaluate latent disorders and optimize the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

The project will be fulfilled at the scientific/engineering and cardiology/clinical pharmacology departments of Scientific and Research Institute of Experimental and clinical Therapy, currently the National Center of Therapy in Georgia. The Center obtains the 25 year experience in the study of medical and biological problems; the technology of biotechnical systems (BTS) synthesis in medicine and 18 automatic diagnostic systems, implemented in a great number of research and clinical laboratories of the former USSR, were developed in the Center. Last decade new techniques for non-invasive complex evaluation of the functional state of cardiovascular system and blood circulation were elaborated.

Participation of the scientists and specialists in “Connection with Arms” project will permit to change the orientation of their activities. It will enhance elaboration by using worked out BTS synthesis techniques, systemic and analysis of data already obtained and being obtained, available methods of informatics and math-statistics, as well as by using their experience in creation of special data base of skills important in achieving the objectives of the project.
