Project summary

One of new perspective directions of modern ophtaimology surgery is the use of single crystal materials (leukosapphire, diamond, and other) as implants of an eye (artificial). Creation of leukosapphire artificial - intraocular lenses (LIOL) and their already rather wide clinical application have shown a number of advantages of this material over traditionally used for these purposes silicone, PMMA and other. The higher bioinertness, absence of clinical contra-indications, minimum width of lenses and perfect optical characteristics make LIOL more and more popular among ophtaimology surgeons and patients. However, now there is no rather convincing conception of the reasons of such properties of leukosapphire in the biological media of an eye, also there is no systematized knowledge on biocompatibility features of this class of implants.

The goal of the project is a studies of interrelation between the physico-chemical characteristics of leukosapphire and other transparent single crystal implants and features of their behaviour in the biologically active media, development of biocompatibility certification criterion for crystalline IOL.

The realization of these studies is directed on rise of quality and creation of new models of artificial crystalline lenses.

In a course of the project fulfillment we suppose to obtain the following basic results:

1. To determine interrelation between biocompatibility and physico-chemical properties single crystal implants.
2. To develop criteria of certification on biocompatibility for IOL from single crystals.
3. To find out peculiarities of interaction of a single crystal implants surface with protein and ways of regulation of this interaction character.
4. To determine the requirements to film coverings of a crystal implants surface, ensuring biocompatibility effect with tissue of an eye.

The obtained results of work will have scientific and applied importance for medicine in the area of transplantation of artificial organs.

In a course of project fulfillment it will be carried out:

- Development of quantitative methods of physicochemical and biomedical properties registration for single crystal materials;
- Obtaining the proofs of interrelation between biocompatibility and physicochemical properties of single crystal materials and products made from them;
- Obtaining the proofs of influence of IOL manufacturing technology on biocompatibility.

Possible Partnership of Foreign Collaborators

We expect the partnership of following foreign organizations: South-western Medical Center, University of Texas, Dallas, USA; University of Akron, Akron, Ohio, USA; University of Utah, Salt-Lake-City, USA. There may be also collaborators from Japan and Netherlands.

We propose the mutual scientific consultations and information exchange. Besides we plan to carry out some studied with the help of equipment of foreign collaborators. Scientific results will be presented at international conferences.
