Project summaryThe project's purpose. Creation and demonstration of the pilot sample of the wheel-stepping transport-tractive machine (WSTTM) which uses the biomechanical wheel-step-by-step principle of motion.
The present project proposal is the advanced expanded variant of the project proposal B-606 "Development of new transport device". These changes are made by authors on the basis of the recommendation of 28-th Session of ISTC Governing Board. This project proposal is a full replacement of previous project proposal B-606.
The state of the art in the field and the impact of the proposed project on the progress in this field.
To the authors of the project any analogues of the transport-tractive devices using a biomechanical wheel-step-by-step principle of movement are not known. Practical realization of the offered project will render essential influence on progress in the field of development of transport-tractive machines for civil economy.
The developed in the project WSTTM will possess the following advantages:
a) simplicity of construction and lower price because of absence of such traditional units of transport machines as transmission and gearbox;
b) the tractive capability is increased in two - three times in comparison with the usual tractive capability of the wheel transport-tractive machines of the same dimensions and weights;
c) the driving engines is of smaller capacity that will provide economy of fuel up to 20%;
d) the wheels of big diameter provide the high cross-country pass ability on the soft ground and overcoming obstacles and pot-holes on soil;
e) the work with fixed wheels gives possibility of motion on ground with big slope and allows to create unique vehicles for works in mountain regions, in mines, and in open pits;
f) easiness of reverse without the 360° turn of all aggregate gives opportunity of plowing with a "shuttle" way which save fuel up to 20%;
g) saving mode of processing of soil; since the WSTTM gives no slipping on soil and can use the basic wheels of unlimited big diameter these its properties provide the lower unit pressure on soil and decrease soil's deformation. So the project will solve such actual problems as preservation of fertility of soil and saving its physical and biochemical properties which are the major problems of the world agriculture today.
The experts who have familiarized with the project, recognize the scientific novelty of concepts offered in the project. They recognize as novelty of a non-traditional way of movement of the proposed in the project machine, the motion of which based on overlapping of two different ways of movement – wheel rolling and stepping. Such combination of these two ways of motion will permit participants of the project to create an essentially new machine named by authors as "wheel-stepping transport-tractive machine" (WSTTM). The foreign collaborators in their letters of support of the present project write about a perspective of practical use of these machines and they express their interest and readiness to take part in the project.
Authors of the project plan to create the pilot sample (pre-production model) of the transport-traction machine of new type that will allow to show the advantages of the wheel-stepping vehicles in comparison with existing wheel-driving ones. The analysis of capacity for work, efficiency, reliability, and cost of the created pre-production pilot sample will allow authors of the project to make offers on creation of a family of machines of new type for use in various areas of economy.
Participants of the Project. Executors of works on the project are two organizations: UIIP NASB (Leading research institute) and P/A "MTW" (Institute the Participant 1).
Participants of the project from the UIIP NASB are experts in the field of rocket technologies, in development of vehicles, the radio-electronic equipment. They invented and patented more than 10 new types of mechanisms and the devices which use biomechanical principles of movement. The project manager, Dr.Sci.Tech., A.Dobrlyubov and other participants of the project are authors of publications, including the monographs issued in Moscow, Minsk, USA, England in 1990 - 2001, they have inventions in machine mechanics.
Participants of the project from P/A "MTW" are qualified experts in the field of rocket technologies on mechanics of transport devices. They developed more than 40 samples of the wheel and caterpillar machines of new types. The deputy manager of the project V.Korobkin is winner of the Lenin premium of the USSR, Cand.Tech.Sci., has more than 95 inventions in machine mechanics.
Expected Results and Their Application. The category of technology development: "Development and Technology Demonstration".
The design documentation and manufacturing techniques of the pilot sample of WSTTM will be developed.
Physical and computer models of the wheel-stepping machines of various purpose, perspective for application in various areas of economy will be developed.
The pilot sample of WSTTM of new type (the rough sizes 2,0 × 4,5 m, weight about 4,0 t.) will be designed, produced, tested and demonstrated. Results of tests in real field conditions in special test station of P/A "MTW" will permit to compare the characteristics of the created pilot sample with regularly produced today a transport-tractive machine of the same weight and power. Calculations show, that the main technical and economic characteristics of the created wheel-stepping tractor will surpass the similar characteristics of analogous machines produced today.
The scientific importance of the concepts offered and approved in the project will result in an opportunity of creation of essentially new class of the wheel-stepping machines of the various purpose having characteristics unattainable in traditional machines of the same purpose and the same dimensions.
The machines created on a sample of the machine developed in the project, will have commercial value for transport mechanical engineering.
It is supposed to protect rights of the intellectual property of the project scientific and engineering results.
The wheel-stepping machines will be applied to arable works in an agriculture, for transportation hook-on agricultural tools, for works on building of roads, as digging trench machines and machines for earth moving, for works in mines and the wood industry. The light wheel-stepping vehicles with a drive by muscular force of the person for the medical and household purposes may be developed.
Meeting ISTC Goals and Objectives. The project meets to goals ISTC because of:
· For scientists and experts from UIIP NASB and P/A "MTW", connected to weapon subjects, the opportunity to direct their professional works on peace problems is given by creation of transport-tractive machines of new type for economic purpose.
· Scientists and experts from UIIP NASB and P/A "MTW will be integrated in the international scientific community with foreign collaborators in creation of new transport-tractive means for different applications.
· The project will promote the decision of actual international problems -- the savings of energy resources, and saving fertility of soil.
· The participants of project could introduce on commercial basis their results to machine building firms and enterprises.
Scope of Activities. Duration of the project is 36 months. The scope of activities makes 587 person-months, from them - 154 - for the Leading Institution and 433 - for the Participant Institution 1.
Role of UIIP NASB in the project: a) choice and calculation of characteristics of the pilot sample; b) demonstration capabilities and applications of WSTTM of different types by creation of their physical and computer demonstration models; c) technical and economic a substantiation of efficiency of the wheel-stepping machines of new type.
Role of P/A "MTW" in the project: a) development of the design documentation. b) manufacturing the pilot sample in industrial conditions.
The works in the project solved in common - UIIP NASB and P/A "MTW": a) development of the technical project, the coordination of the technical project with collaborators. b) the coordination of technical solutions on the pilot sample c) working out the program of tests and realization the tests of the pilot sample with the invitation collaborators to take part in the testing procedures.
Role of Foreign Collaborators: a) granting of comments about decisions of the project; b) participation in work on definition of potential consumers of results of the project; c) participation in questions of protection of the intellectual property under the project; d) participation in realization of joint tests of the pilot sample; e) participation in preparation of the conclusions on different stages of the project and on the project as a whole, joint scientific publications, participation in scientific seminars.
Technical Approach and Methodology. In the Institute of engineering cybernetics of National Academy of Sciences (in 2002 it was renamed into United Institute of Informatics Problems - UIIP NASB) the works on studying the methods of locomotion of some living creatures are conducted with the aim of creation of transport devices of the new type using the biomechanical principles of movement. The wheel-stepping method was invented by the participants of the project. The method combines the biomechanics of stepping motion of some living creatures, for example a horse, and rolling of wheels. Above said permits the authors to name this new method of motion as biomechanical one.
The method allows to create wheel-stepping transport tractive machines (WSTTM) with some basic characteristics which are unreachable for traditional machines of the same destination.
The technical approach and technology of development and production the pilot sample of WSTTM will correspond to standard world practice of machine design with use the principles of decomposition of complicated problems, of priority their decisions and CALS-technologies. It assumes the testing of the pilot sample in real testing field of the Minsk tractor plant and comparison the produced WSTTM with technical parameters of existing machines of the same purpose and power (admittedly with produced now tractor МТZ 80).
