Project summary

The main goal of the project is to study the fauna and bioecology of invertebrate animals of urban area on the example of Tbilisi. The presented project will give an opportunity to our “weapon” scientists, to use their resources for peaceful aims, will help them to integrate in international scientific society and to take part in environment sanitation of their own country.

This question represents one of the main ecological problems not only for Tbilisi. Several scientists of the world are engaged in this issue, while the part of traffic in pollution of the vital environment of the cities is already more then 80%.

The observations on the different groups of invertebrate animals will give us a clear picture of pollution in such an urban area, as Tbilisi.

All over the world bioindication of urban environment through different groups of invertebrate animals is very problematic. It provides a huge number of works in this field But in Georgia, except of a few attempts, vast research through the different groups of invertebrate animals of city fauna, was not hold yet.

Together with increasing of city pollution, diminishes number of invertebrate animals. Therefore, according to the quantitative and qualitative composition, we can judge about the level of pollution in such an urban area, as Tbilisi.

The goal of the project is to study the influence of harmful excretions of factories and traffic (nitrogen, carbon, sulphur and other oxides) on the quantity of phyto- and entomophag insects and on soil inhabiting invertebrate animals in the city territory.

The transects from city outskirts to the city center will be studied; the most ecologically polluted districts of the city will be established; the most attention will be paid to the study of invertebrate animals on the territory of the Russian Transcaucasian Staff and those territories, where the military unites of former Soviet Union have been located; package of recommendations for ecological condition improvement of the city will be produced to municipality. The results of the researches will be shown in scientific articles.

The received results can be used for ecologic-faunistic characteristic of the fauna of c. Tbilisi and for bioindication of pollution of urban ecosystems.

The International Science and Technology Center (ISTC) is an intergovernmental organization connecting scientists from Kazakhstan, Armenia, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Georgia with their peers and research organizations in the EU, Japan, Republic of Korea, Norway and the United States.

ISTC facilitates international science projects and assists the global scientific and business community to source and engage with CIS and Georgian institutes that develop or possess an excellence of scientific know-how.
