Project summary

It is proposed working out of the method of neutron spectrum measurements based on a use of the composed sample including a set of resonance detectors. For these detectors it is offered to use isotopes with a few strong neutron resonance. Gamma-activity measurements of irradiated samples will be measured by Ge-spectrometer. Gamma-lines in spectra are allowed to find contributions from all resonance detectors simultaneously. Accordingly the information about the neutron spectrum can be received in one irradiation and measurement.

Re-establishing of differential spectra from measurement results is carried out by mathematical methods with using of neutron cross sections and resonance integrals of activation. A set of equations is solved for intervals of neutron energy, the number of which is directly connected with the number of activation resonance detectors.

Program of working out of measurement method and making of the complex resonance detectors must include:

1). Selection of nuclei and compounds for resonance detectors.
2). Manufacture of detectors.
3). Carrying out of test irradiation’s on reactor installations, measurements of an induced radioactivity and the re-establish of neutron spectra from measurement data.
4). Working out of computer programs for re-establishing of neutron spectra from measurement data.

The goal of this proposal is working out of methods of carrying out measurements including of finding of irradiated and measurement processes and working out of computer programs.

Methods of measurements must provide an investigation of neutron spectra in conditions of research reactors, critical facilities and NPP. Region of neutron energies: from thermal up to 1-10 keV depend on flux of neutrons. Measured flux of thermal neutrons is 108-1014 n/cm2 s, fluency-108-1018 n/cm2.

The spectrum is typical for energetic and research nuclear facilities.

Neutron spectrum measurements are supposed to carry out on RRC "Kurchatov Institute" installations (research reactors, critical facilities). Realization of this proposal allows providing a new level of the measurement of neutron flux parameters at NPP and research nuclear installations.

European Working Group of Reactor Dosimeter,
Working Group on Reactor Dosimetry for VVER Reactor (WGRD-VVER),
American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM).
