Project summary

TiO2 is known as photocatalyst for oxidation of organic pollutants. TiO2 is used for the photocatalytic disinfection purposes last time. Illuminated TiO2 film has hydrophilic properties. It is can be used for preparation anti-fog coatings. Moreover, TiO2 films are widely used for anti-reflection coatings at the surfaces of optical elements. Also TiO2 films are used as a UV filter λ<380 nm. To realize all mentioned functions a special preparation technique of TiO2 film is needed. TiO2 films with different structure demonstrate different properties. For instance, normally porous TiO2 films show higher photocatalytic activity than smooth. In opposite, the smooth films obviously demonstrate higher optical properties. The preparation of the TiO2 films for photocatalysis on the polymer substrate is a special problem, because polymer substrate should be protected against the peroxidation due to photocatalytic TiO2 activity. Moreover, traditional techniques of TiO2 film preparation suggest a stage of high temperature sintering of TiO2 photocatalytic film. The polymer restricts the temperature of the TiO2 photocatalysts film treatment. Taking into account all placed requirements for TiO2 film such as high photocatalytic activity, good optical properties, good adhesion and mechanical strength it is clear that the development of multifunctional TiO2 covering of polymer substrate is pretty complicated applied problem. Nevertheless, this problem is feasible by using of approach of formation of structured TiO2 films made from nanocrystals.

The current project is aimed on the development of the technology of polycarbonate (PC) and polyurethane (PU) covering by nanostructured TiO2 films. These TiO2 films should satisfy requirements:

  1. photocatalytic activity towards organic pollutants oxidation and self cleaning properties;
  2. photocatalytic bactericid effect;
  3. high wetting properties under illumination with anti-fog properties;
  4. TiO2 should not damage a polymer substrate at least 5000 h under UV Xe-lamp light WOM G26;
  5. TiO2 films should be good optical quality, transparent, without cracks, light scattering with haze less than 1 %;
  6. TiO2 film should have a scratch resistance, and a high adhesion.

To obtain formulated aims various techniques of TiO2 films formation on PC and PU will be developed. The prepared films will be tested toward photocatalytic activity, disinfection abilities, optical properties, anti-fog properties, and mechanical properties. The optimal technique multifunctional TiO2 film on PC and PU will be developed from the view point of the ratio of quality to economic expenses.
