Project summary

At present the Project # 817-98 entitled «The design of knock sensors for control systems of the car engine» is close to completion.

The book summarized the data and experience of the Project participants, Russian institutes as well as other known companies, in the design, computational techniques and design- technological development of the car knock sensors of various types (broadband, resonance and semiresonance with a broad bandwidth). The size of the book will be 120 – 180 A4 pages.

Currently, actually all Russian car-production plants plan to manufacture the new generation of cars with an integrated control system, including the knock suppression system based on a piezoelectric knock sensor, that is demonstration by numerous publications. However, no books are available for the development of knock sensors, and scattered data on the development process of such devices in Russia only confirm the lack of knowledge in this field.

The proposed book must serve a factor not only integrating the efforts of multiple car devices developers, but also contributing to further conversion of enterprises.

This may be exemplified by the Urals Electromechanical Plant (Ekaterinburg) which is involved in mass production of knock sensors for GAZ-3102, GAZ-31029, GAZ-3110 cars since 1994.

The systematization of data on knock sensors careful analysis of various design concepts will allow not only to improve designs and characteristics of existing knock sensors, but also to apply the outcome of the Project in the development of other piezoelectric transducers.

In the course of writing the book many leading specialists familiarized themselves with its materials: designers of cars and car engines, developers of space engineering, etc. All of them agree that the publication of this book is necessary (see attachment).

The objective of the present Project is to publish the book printed in a printing house and to produce its multimedium version (on CD-ROM disks), this is variant 1. Variant 2 (reduced variant of the Project) consists only in printing the book (without involvement of SBIPRAS specialists).

At present neither domestic nor foreign analogues of such publications about sensors are available. Thus, this pioneer development might find consumers both in Russia and abroad.

Participation in the ISTC project of weapons scientists and specialists will provide them opportunities to be involved in peaceful research, specifically, in the development of the new generation of the car knock sensors and other mechanical piezoelectric transducers used in various fields of science and technology. The proposed project will also allow to publish the book which can be used as methodical aid for designers of motor vehicles, various piezoelectric sensors as well as for many specialists, post graduates and students from engineering institutes.

Scope of work: printing the book in Russian with a circulation of 500 –1000 copies, preparation of the book layout in English, development of the demo layout in INTERNET, publication of a multimedium book with a circulation of 500 – 1000 compact disks (only for variant 1).Foreign collaborator of the Project will be involved in scientific consultations, data exchange and in discussion of the obtained results. Besides, the collaborator will perform technical editing of the book published in English.

Planned activities under the Project are based on the experience gained by the Project participants while performing project 817-98 and in the issuance of various advertisements of piezosensors, including advertising through the INTERNET.

The authors, who developed multimedium technologies (SBIPRAS), have accumulated great experience in the development and publication of similar multimedium systems. In particular, they developed a series of computer textbooks «Sensor Dynamics» (Volume 1. Dynamics of Pressure Sensors, Vol. 2 Dynamics of Thermoresistors, Vol. 3. Dynamics of acceleration vibration and shock sensors), published in mass circulation in England and Germany. In contrast to traditional information and reference materials distributed as books or video cassettes, the proposed multimedium book will be produced as a multimedium system on compact disks, that will enable to have combined under one cover (one medium) three- dimensional graphics and animation, digital video, program models, colour slides and photoes, texts and sound recording, etc.
