Project summaryThe purpose of the project is to perform demonstration field tests of electrokinetic decontamination of local sites contaminated with radionuclides and heavy metals. These field tests will be conducted as a result of development of the effective and ecological - safe technological schemes and reliable equipment.
The electrokinetic approach is a new and advanced method of soil cleaning and its main advantages are in possibility of its implementation in-situ without displacement of great soil volumes and in case of low permeable soils.
During the project realization experimental investigations for determination of contaminant leaching conditions, main performance parameters of the electrokinetic decontamination process on real soils will be carried out. Constructional materials for the electrode assembly embodiment will be selected and tested. Method of contaminant extraction and concentration from electrolytes will be developed. Electrode assemblies, schemes of technological and electric equipment, unit for electrolyte treatment on pilot facility will be designed. Optional equipment will be made and demonstration field facility will be mounted. The demonstration field tests of the technology will be carried out, the optimum technological parameters of the process will be determined. Electric parameters of the soil decontamination and electrolyte treatment will be optimized. At the end of the work the recommendations to application and use of the technology for different conditions of soil pollution will be produced.
The work is planned to be conducted within 2 years. During the first year laboratory studies and development work will be carried out. During the second year the experimental electrokinetic installation will be made and mounted and demonstration field tests will be performed at real contaminated site.
The technological scheme, special equipment and demonstration facility, having been developed for the electrokinetic decontamination of soils with application of flow electrode assemblies, have no analogues in Russia and abroad. In this project a problem on implementation of the technical and technological solutions providing soil decontamination and radionuclide concentration in sorbent with its consequent utilization is set for the first time.
Experienced scientists and engineers, who before dealt with uranium recovering technology and nuclear test operation, will take part in the project implementation.
Techniques and actual experience of operation in application of sorption, membrane and electrokinetic processes for soil cleaning from radionuclides and heavy metals will be used by "Krasnaya Zvezda" and MosNPO"Radon" specialists during the study.
