Project summary

The Project goal is the reduction of consumption of fossil fuel in municipal and industrial power system of Kyrgyzstan; involving the biomass existing into the form of agricultural wastes in the fuel balance of boiler-houses; creation of some additional vacancies related to manufacturing granulated biofuel and also additional providing of power security of the country through alternative energy sources.

The Project task: in the course of the project implementation researches in the following directions will be carried out:

  • finding out of the optimal way of combustion of agricultural waste biogranules (in a fixed bed, in a boiling bed, in a velocity bed, combustion in a dust cone with advance reduction of granules),
  • finding out of a way of stabilizing the combustion process and steady ignition of fresh fuel feeding to the furnace of the boiler without deteriorating of weight and size characteristics of the boiler,
  • working out the design of the experimental boiler and the furnace plant, manufacturing of the experimental boiler of industrial capacity including the introduced way of biogranule combustion and stabilizing of the process of their combustion.

The Project relevance is conditioned by the fact that Kyrgyzstan as many other countries of Central Asia has great potential for use of renewable energy. In addition to water-power potential there are several resources of brown coal with the quality high enough Kyrgyzstan (the explored deposits are 1.34 bln tons; the coal mining is 0. 4 M tons according to the data of 2006). Besides, there are large enough supplies of biomass, basically crop production and cattle breeding wastes in the republic. Average annual crop harvest in the republic is about 1.6 M tons. Since straw harvest is 1.5 – 2.0 times more than the amount of annual straw harvest in the country is about 2.5 – 3.0 M tons of straw. The combustion value of straw is not lower and, as for a number of deposits, is even higher than the combustion value of local brown coal. Along with brown coal straw can become a serious alternative to hydroenergetics and can help the republic overcome the energy crisis.

The participants of the Project together with collaborators suggest carrying out a number of researches in Kyrgyzstan on the condition and prospects of the development of alternative power. The creation of a boiler installation on the basis of the use of technologies of slagless combustion of granulated crop production wastes with its further serial production is also suggested.

The Project is based on fourteen years experience of training the experts of the department of “Alternative and Renewed Energy Sources» of the Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University, long-term working experience with the experts of the thermal power station in Bishkek, industrial and regional boiler-houses, and also cooperation with the scientists and experts of the Tambov state technical university.

The Project category is «Applied technologies», it allows to use the technology of slagless combustion of granulated crop production wastes for obtaining extra energy sources in the republic which has no hydrocarbons while other kinds of energy sources do not guarantee stability of power security. Positive results of the researches of combustion of granulated crop production wastes allow to render the essential help to Kyrgyzstan, to the countries of Central Asia and to other countries in sustainable development, and also in protection of natural resources and ecology. A very prominent aspect of the project is its orientation to complying with the Kyoto agreement on the reduction of harmful emissions into the atmosphere, and also its orientation to other resolution of international organisations on sustainable development and eradication poverty.

The following fundamental tasks are to be performed during the implementation of the Project:

  • Working out the technology of combustion of crop production waste granules;
  • Study of the characteristics of combined fluidization of agropellets and particles of their carbon residue and ashes;
  • Study of the characteristics of combined combustion of granules, particles of their carbon residue and ashes in a boiling bed;
  • Working out the engineering specifications on an experimental model of the boiler installation applying the developed technology of combustion of crop production waste granules;
  • Manufacturing of an experimental model of the boiler installation applying the developed technology of combustion, experimental model testing.

The results obtained in the course of the project implementation are to be the following:
  • Making physical and mathematical models of agropellet combustion in a fluidized bed, formed by pellets, particles of their carbon residue and ashes;
  • Manufacturing an experimental model of a furnace with a boiling bed for agropellet combustion;
  • Working out of new technologies of slagless combustion of granulated crop production wastes;
  • Working out and implementation of serial production of water-heating and automated boilers with capacity of 200, 300, 500 and 800 kW usign biogranules;
  • Providing ecological security within the region;
  • Exchange of information in the course of the Project implementation.

  • Practical application of the Project results and partnership in their commercialization;
