Proteolytic enzymes (trypsin, chymotrypsin and others) are widely used in treatment of wounds of different etiology because they facilitate wound debridement from necrotic tissues. A proteolytic enzyme preparation from king crab (Paralithodes camtschatica) hepatopancreas exerts a necrolytic effect in healing infected wounds, and its pharmacological activity is significantly higher than of proteases such as trypsin, terrilytin, caripazin, and others.
The crab hepatopancreas collagenase preparation is produced at the State Research Centre of Virology and Biotechnology "Vector". Ointment preparations based on collagenase from king crab are not available.
The effects of an ointment, containing king crab collagenase, on intact skin, thermal, and pyonecrotic wounds were tested in rats using hematological, biochemical, immunological, and morphological methods. The ointment was shown to be nontoxic to skin and viscera. It is highly effective in debridement of infected wounds and it is similar in therapeutic effect to Iruxol (Croatia). During this project, preclinical studies are to be completed and clinical trials will be performed.
The tasks of the Project are as follows:
· the development of technology for the production of ointment form of preparations based on king crab collagenase for treatment of wounds of different etiology, including burns;
· the performance of preclinical and clinical trials.
· approval of the production and medical application of the preparation by the Russian Ministry of Public Health.
