Project summary

At present the biological effects of extremely weak infrasound (IS) and electromagnetic fields (EMF) on different organisms can be considered as well documented facts. However the mechanisms through which the IS and EMF signals transduction to intracellular metabolism is realized are not clear yet. It is known that the extremely low frequency (ELF) EMF Modulated Millimeter Wave (MMW) has stronger effect that non modulated one. However the nature of mechanisms of ELF-induce elevation effect of MMW is not clear also. The data on the modulation effect of IS on MMW-induced biological effects are rather limited.

According to an existing hypothesis, extra cellular water serves as one of the essential targets through which the biological effects of IS and EMF are realized. Therefore it is suggested that the study IS and EMF effects on physicochemical properties of water and water solution in different experimental conduction could be possible not only to elucidate the messenger role of cell aqua bathing medium in IS and EMF signals transduction in biological systems as well as to understand the IS and EMF inpidual and interaction effects on physicochemical properties of water which seems extremely important from the point of environmental control and meteorological views. As first step of these studies serve the previous ISTC Project No. #1592P “ The Comparative Study of The Effects of ELF EMF and IS on Water Molecule Dissociation and Generation of Reactive Oxygen Species”. By this project was shown that IS and ELF EMF have modulation effects on water molecule dissociation, determining the physicochemical properties of water and water solution. Such changes of water properties cause to change of gas solubility and hydrogen peroxide formation in water. Mentioned effects of IS and ELF EMF are strong frequency-dependent which can be modulated by temperature, saline composition, light intensity and background radiation. On the basis of these data were already elaborated 4 patents on biological effect of IS or ELF pretreated water solution on growth and developments plants, microbes, sperm motility and tumor growth.

The preliminary study of non thermal effect of IS and ELF modulated MMW-induced effects on water properties was demonstrated that the frequency “ windows” at which IS and ELF EMF has more pronounced effect on water properties, were also more effective in case of IS- and ELF EMF- modulated MMW –induced the non thermal effect of on water properties. These preliminary data seems very promising to understand the nature of mechanism through which the IS and ELF EMF-induced modulations of MMW effect on water and living systems properties are realized. Consequently, it is suggested that the comparative study of the effects IS and ELF EMF modulation of MMW-, Terahertz (THz)-, and Infrared (IR)-induced changes physicochemical properties of water and water solution at different environmental conditions (temperature, background ionizing radiation, gases composition) could bring us to results allowing us to understand not only mechanisms of the influences inpidual and combination effect of these factors on living organisms and also could bring us to close in understanding their role in generation a number meteorological events taking place in water and air. Therefore, the overall aim of the present project is to conduct a comparative study of the IS and ELF EMF frequency-dependent effect on MMW-, THz- and IR –induced changes on physicochemical properties of water and water solutions, such as specific electrical conductance (SEC), specific adsorption rate (SAR), specific heat capacity (SHC), gas solubility, formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and complex dielectric constant. For these purposes the potenciometric, microcalorometric, chemoluminicent and THz time-domain spectrometer (TDS) methods were be used.
