Project summary

The objective of the "ASTRONEUTROM" project, is to conduct, by joint efforts of the creative collectives of four scientific centers of the Russian Atomic Energy Ministry and of the Russian Academy of sciences, applied theoretical and experimental investigations concerned with the fundamental scientific problem of natural nucleosynthesis.

As a result of realizing the project there will be created computer programs for calculation of neutron radiative capture cross-sections and fission cross-sections for neutron-enriched nuclei with account of data accumulated to date on the yields of different nuclides in nuclear explosions, theoretical and phenomenological calculations of these values will be conducted (the first section of the project).

Experimental simulation of natural nucleosynthesis for the search into the mechanism of nuclei formation, which do not form in neutron capture processes, will be carried out by using a proton accelerator with the energy ~ 1 GeV on line with a high-sensitivity mass-spectrometer for analysis of the yields of nuclear reactions products, (the second section of the project).

n the third section of the project, as a result of collection and analysis of data published in literature and with account of results obtained in the first section, a nuclear data bank will be created, including rates of neutron capture, beta-decay, alpha-decay, beta-delayed neutron emission, beta-delayed fission and other characteristics of neutron-enriched nuclei decay, for calculations of the synthesis of heavy nuclides (A > 100) in the process of rapid neutron capture of natural nucleosynthesis. The numerical simulation of rapid neutron capture will be done by the kinetic and dynamic models with different sets of seed (starting) nuclei of the r-process.

In this project there used a certain part of works already conducted by the participating organizations. It includes development experimental and mathematical methods of studying main processes encountered in nuclear science and technology, methods of solving complex equations,. experience of accumulation of assessed data banks.

The "ASTROMEUTRON" project will allow to re-orient the gifts of scientists developing nuclear weapons to peaceful activity. Most those specialists, in order of information exchange and creative contacts, have already closely concerned the problem of heavy elements origin in nature. Thus, the proposed project meets the aims and objectives of the ISTC, as it enables scientists, having knowledge and experience of nuclear weapons development, to direct their scientific potential at solving of interesting fundamental scientific problem.
